FRANKENMUTH -- The Michigan State Director of American Atheists is coming to the Frankenmuth City Council meeting Tuesday. The group plans to discuss the city shield, which is at the center of a debate because it includes a cross. Alrene-Marie, the director tells NBC25,  "there is little doubt that Frankenmuth's official city shield with its Luther Rose and white cross not only endorses religion but a particular religion - Lutheranism.  Typically, the courts frown on this dual endorsement, viewing it as unconstitutional."

American Atheists is a nationwide movement that defends civil rights for nonbelievers; works for the total separation of church and state and address issues of First Amendment public policy.

Frankenmuth resident Lloyd Clark is behind the push to get the cross taken out of its shield. Clark says he will also be at Tuesday's City Council meeting.

Mr. Clark should NOT have the power to change an entire town and it's history!

Couldn't agree more with Lois from Birch Run!!! I am so sick of having our Christian homes and country desecrated by those who are offended by the name of God or Christ. Like it or not, this country was FOUNDED by Christians. We are NOT the minority! If you don't like it, then sorry... but it is what it is!

Why is it that one single person can threaten an entire town?? This town was FOUNDED by Lutheran Missionaries! This town has grown and prospered and been BLESSED because of these Lutheran people...and every generation thereafter. Christianity is the foundation of this town. Frankenmuth is honoring its founding fathers and its heritage by this seal. To remove the cross would be shameful.

If Mr. Clark doesn't like it...then LEAVE! Nobody is holding him prisoner, forcing him to live there. Nobody is forcing him to become a Christian nor a Lutheran. Nobody is forcing him to even like it. Rather, HE is who CHOSE to make Frankenmuth his home, and that includes all that comes with it.

Mr. Clark, why is it that YOU have no qualms about offending tens of thousands of people who are proud of honoring Frankenmuth's heritage, all in the name of one atheist being offended by such a symbol?? If you can't handle being part of Frankenmuth's rich history and heritage, then by all means, MOVE! Leave this beautiful town in the hands of people who do care and who do have an appreciation and love of their history. You CAN'T change history just because you don't like it!!!

Let's all hope and pray that the town council members will do the right thing and keep Frankenmuth's seal the way it is meant to be. To remove it on the grounds of the complaints of Mr. Clark, or ANYBODY, would be tragic - and a terrible disregard to Frankenmuth's beautiful, rich history AND it's future.

Christians shouldn't have to give up their towns

Christians should not have to give up their towns or the beliefs that the towns and as a matter of fact the country was founded on so that a group a of non believers won't be offended. If you are not a Christian that is your choice . Find a place that better fits your lifestyle rather than trying to push other people to bend to you when you are the minority . Frankenmuth is a very strong Christian town always has been and always will be . What are you going to want next Bronners to take down all the CHRISTmas signs ??? And I will bet a dollar to a dime that you have all been in that wonderful Christian store on more than one occasion. Have a blessed day

This country was formed by Christians

And if the atheists don't like it they should keep their mouths shut! It is our right to have freedom of Religion and for one atheists are not a religion so what right do they have to put down the beliefs of other religions because a cross is on a sign - what's up atheists? Do your eyes burn when you see a cross?
