Cross controversy in Frankenmuth Sunday, April 20, 2008 Editor, The News: With regard to the cross controversy in Frankenmuth, I believe it is the right of the citizens in this exceptional community to keep their symbols displayed as they have for many decades. The cross is as much a part of this town as is a chicken dinner. Why should a lone citizen have the right to change what has been in place for years? He is messing with the culture and heritage of a grateful community that cherishes its roots. The city manager should not have given in to his ridiculous demands. It is now time to stand up to people such as Lloyd Clarke and kindly show him the truth of what our Founding Fathers intended when, through the protection of the Constitution, they guaranteed religious rights. This is still America and the law allows communities to express their heritage through religious symbols. If Clarke can't stand to look at a cross, maybe it is time for him to move on to a more atheistic community. Clarke has been in Frankenmuth for only four years and already he presumes to know what is best for this unique town we love to visit and share with our children and our grandchildren. It is my sincere hope that the leaders of Frankenmuth would work to protect the rights of its citizens, guaranteed by our Founding Fathers, to express their Christian heritage. Dave Urbytes Saginaw Township Satan's pit? Editor, The News: Frankenmuth is an oasis in a desert where one can speak openly of faith in the Lord when many other communities cower in this faith. Our Constitution declares freedom of religion, not freedom from religion. I am sorry for those who do not yet know their savior. I, however, stand firmly opposed to anyone who attempts to intimidate me and reduce my community to Satan's pit. My nation and community were founded on and dedicated to Judeo-Christian standards. For those who choose not to share in this faith or find it difficult to put up with Shalom (peace in the Lord), I suggest they move -- to Russia, China, anywhere. But beware. Those who truly know God will stand for him publicly and unashamedly. God has placed a remnant of faithful believers everywhere. There is no escaping God's people and their joy and confidence in the truth. May all come to the saving knowledge in the Lord Jesus as messiah.
